THE FREELANCE HELLRAISER & THE 20TH CENTURY FOX
INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE DAY
A long time ago (last year), in a galaxy far, far away (somewhere between Norwich and Liverpool)
THE FREELANCE HELLRAISER
We should do a club or something.
THE 20TH CENTURY FOX
Yeah.
and STRAIGHT TO VIDEO was born.
Straight To Video DJ duo, The Freelance Hellraiser & The 20th Century Fox, have a strict M.O. - music from the movies. If it's been on the big screen, it's on their decks.
That sounds like it could be some kind of horrific 80s-a-thon, but its not. There's a fine line between guilty pleasures and cheese...
...And we know which side of that line to stay on. We mash up scores and twist soundtracks, as well as throwing in old favourites.
Although we dont take ourselves or our musical remit too seriously, being hen night would actually be our worst nightmare.
Which is why 'Greased Lightning' et al have been banished from the Straight To Video repertoire.
Straight To Video began in 2008, in a bar in Shoreditch, London. It soon outgrew the small venue and moved to Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes. Guest DJ cameos at the night have included Edgar Wright (director of Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz), Phill Jupitus, Osymyso and Eddy Temple-Morris.
As the hype snowballed, the Straight To Video team were called upon by Rob Da Bank to take over his BBC Radio 1 show for a 2-hour Halloween special. Next month, Foxy & Freelance will be heard on XFM in the All-Time Top 10 - a segment of The Remix show.
Remixers create a 10-minute mix of their favourite tracks. The record currently stands at 78 tracks.
Someone had better call Norris McWhirter because that record is about to be smashed.
WHO ARE STRAIGHT TO VIDEO?
Bogart & Bacall...Laurel & Hardy...Han & Chewie...
Double-acts are as synonymous with cinema as popcorn and Revels
The Freelance Hellraiser needs no introduction. Having pioneered the mash-up scene with his 'Stroke Of Genius' remix of Christina Aguilera's 'Genie In A Bottle' and 'Hard To Explain' by The Strokes, he went on to release his own album, Waiting For Clearance, through SonyBMG, collaborating with the likes of Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody and Jan Hammer along the way.
(in Don LeFontaine voice)
In a world where analogue kids collect machine-stamped vinyl and laser-cut CDs, strange and unexplainable patterns manifested in the fading spines and cracked covers of their manmade carapaces...
Recurring and mystical names such as Lalo Schiffrin, Giorgio Moroder, John Carpenter and Claudio Simonetti..
THE FREELANCE HELLRAISER (cont.)
These celluloid minstrels have been soundtracking, not just films, but also our lives for the last four decades.
As the boiling caldera of movie score gems reached its zenith at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, The Freelance Hellraiser heard the call from the movie gods out in the ether...
Remake and re-organise. Re-style and re-tool. Re-tangle the tape and press play.
Re-assemble a brave new sound.
We bring you STRAIGHT TO VIDEO-O-O-O-OH...
Having DJed just about everywhere, including Madison Square Garden and the headline slot on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage during Paul McCartney's 2004 World Tour, he was then commissioned to record an official re-edit album featuring remixes of Macca's back catalogue. Freelance is currently writing and producing with two of the UK's hottest properties - VV Brown and Little Boots.
I'm a lot less conceited than my name suggests. Honest.
Foxy began her professional life as a Publicist for artists and events, including Live 8, the BRIT Awards and Take That. She switched sides and is now a freelance writer in addition to her Straight To Video duties. The 20th Century Fox divides her time between London and New York.
I've always been a behind-the-scenes person, so being in front of people and performing was a bit weird at first. The Freelance Hellraiser taught me everything I know, so I'm in good hands. I'm like Daniel-son to his Mr Miyagi.
We're Detroit like Axel, Italo like Rocky.
I still rock it Freelance, bt now I'm joined by
Foxy.
Were a good combo because I'm more mainstream, while Freelance veers towards the chin-strokey stuff. Essentially, we're a pair film and music nerds, but in different ways. And it works.
The End
